COOPERATIVA SOCIALE BIO-AGRI SILLA

The Bio Agri Silla farm started in 1998 in Silanus, in central Sardinia, following the closure of a limestone quarry. Some of the unemployed workers decided to undertake what for some had always been a passion: cultivate and transform medicinal plants.

For about ten years, the cooperative has been focussed on the collection and initial transformation of wild medicinal herbs, and for some years it has embarked on growing some species. It is a clear example of transforming industrial land into agricultural land. Situated at the foot of Monte Arbu, where mining of inert materials used to be carried out, it has for several years also handled beekeeping and the production of monofloral honey, abbattu, propolis, royal jelly and honey in honeycomb. The cooperative handles about one hectare of land for its cultivations, where there are, other than organic cultivation of rosemary, helichrysum and saffron, about sixty beehives used for the production of organic honey. It also makes use of the non-arable area, included in an environmental reconditioning project over a total area of seven hectares.

There is also a glass and iron greenhouse used as a nursery, a structure to give shade to the setting up of a botanical garden intended for educational purposes and the selection of specific seeds; two workshops designed for the transformation and production of agricultural products, a wooden house for educational purposes and a shop for promoted products, another building near to completion to welcome visitors.

The Bio Agri Silla Society is part of an environmental setting rich in diverse species of medicinal herbs, due to this a substantial part of essential oil production comes from the collection of wild herbs, among which are thyme, mugwort, bay, myrtle, lavender, and eucalyptus.

Since 2011, the cooperative has also been a teaching farm and has been carrying out a series of beekeeping and medicinal herb workshops with all types of schools, universities and adults. Recently, Agri Silla, in collaboration with the Progetto H cooperative from Macomer, has been working with social issues, welcoming people with learning difficulties by integrating them into a working environment.
