The Artessile company is a textile company operating in the Sardinian handmade rugs, tapestries, curtains and accessories production sector. It is based on using natural materials such as wool, flax and cotton.
The company, which has been operating in the sector for more than thirty years, has gained experience which lends to their high-quality standard products.
From the creativity of Elena Mulas, one of the best unions between materials was started: Sardinian wool and Asphodelus. More a work of art than weaving, where the light reflections of S’Iscraria (the Sardinian name for Asphodelus) produce a golden effect that immediately strikes anyone who looks at it.
The Ballu Tundu project arose from the idea of combining tradition and innovation by using ancient materials and techniques, tied to the art of weaving and basket weaving.
By using ancient wooden looms, high-quality works are created, through the knowledgeable hands of expert weavers. The looms can create pieces such as rugs, tapestries, curtains, etc. Sardinian sheep wool, cotton and flax are used, often with their natural colours or dyed with vegetable substances, while through the Asphodelus, whose workmanship has equally ancient roots, baskets and containers are woven with always the most striking designs. And so, combining the particular workmanship of wool with that of Asphodelus, an idea was created to depict the ideas of unity, brotherhood, joy and harmony across the portrayal of seven dancing couples (there were seven kingdoms in the spring of 1861 which gave rise to Italy) united in the most popular dance in Sardinia: the “Ballo Tondo” (Ballu Tundu).
The ballo tondo is the quintessential Sardinian dance. It is also the most common, and full of ancestral importance, most certainly originating from appeasing rituals. It is an expression of “community heritage”, that the community for many reasons identifies itself with. The piece that is meant to be represented here is a tapestry at whose base, woven orbace (a type of coarse woollen cloth, waterproof and typical of Sardinian costumes) the cortex from the Aspholdelus is inserted, to give it shape, in this case, to the dancing couples who, holding hands in a circle create a harmonious and joyful dance.
