Ulassai Ogliastra

The Municipal Washhouse of Ulassai and the works of Maria Lai

The Municipal Washhouse, one of the most important buildings in the country, was built between 1903 and 1905. On the right side there is a fountain, Sa Funtana e s’Era or also called Sa Funtana e Susu, it is thought to be the oldest fountain in the country, its water is used for the irrigation of the gardens in the vicinity. On the left side there are ancient tubs, where the grain was washed after harvesting  in ancient times. The structure today contains several incredible works of artists in the '80s, and these masterpieces have decorated and embellished the iconic washhouse, among the artists there is Maria Lai, Costantino Nivola, artist from Orani, Luigi Veronesi and Guido Strazza, the first artist's work is the ceiling frame from 1982, which decorates the ceiling inside as if it was a real frame, Nivola created instead the Fontana Sonorain 1987, a particular structure that channels the water in a certain way, creating sounds that make the water "sing", Luigi Veronesi created a mosaic in 1984 made of pieces of granite and pink and white marble, while Guido Strazza created another mosaic of white marble and granite tiles in 1989 that recalls the shape of ears of wheat, making the building suggestively stunning.
