The sanctuary of Santu Franziscu, or, the sanctuary of Saint Francis of Assisi, located at the foot of Monte Albo, is considered one of the most important country sanctuaries on the entire island.
As the patron saint of “balentes” (bandits), according to popular belief, it is thought that the sanctuary was built in honour of the saint after the release of some unjustly convicted men and the men themselves built the sanctuary to thank him. Inside, in addition to the church, there are several modern “cumbessias” arranged in a circular way. The sanctuary is also a destination for pilgrims who reach the sanctuary on foot on the feast day, walking many kilometres on dirt paths in the countryside.
