The origins of the Sanctuary of San Mauro date back to the 12th century as part of the important Romanisation movement in the Sardinian church. Today's building is the result of several construction phases starting at the end of the 15th century and continuing until the end of the 16th century, with further Baroque additions of remarkable dimensions given the character of the country church.
The sanctuary is the heart of a religious settlement of historical importance in which the pilgrims' houses, called "muristènes" gravitated around the church. These were small guest houses arranged in rows, now partially restored, where the devoted people stayed during the week of the festival and the novenas. In the centre of the facade, above the portal, a majestic Romanesque rose window stands, which, with a diameter of 4.5 metres, is the largest in all the churches in Sardinia.
