Baunei Ogliastra

Golgo Plateau

The Golgo Plateau is 8 kilometres far from the village of Baunei. It’s a large area of dark basalts at an altitude of 400 metres asl covered on Mediterranean scrub. It can be reached throughout a spectacular series of hairpin turns after which a breathtaking view over The Gennargentu mountain and the Arbatax Gulf, appears. Whereas, a launching pad has been recently prompted for paragliding lovers. Inside Golgo there is the abyss of Su Sterru a natural sinkhole close to the country church of San Pietro. The abyss height is of 270 metres being the highest span in Europe. In ancient times it was considered as the crater of an extinguished volcano being named in the maps as ‘Cratere Vecchio’, the old one. In 1957 it was fully explored revealing its carsic origin: although the entrance is of dark basalt the inner walls are made of white limestone caved by the erosion. The Name Su Sterru meand both descent or excavation.
