Clinging to the rock of Monte Trunconi, you can admire the remains of Gairo Vecchio, the ghost town of Ogliastra and eastern Sardinia par excellence. According to the chronicles of the time, it was abandoned in 1951 after 5 days of incessant rain and wind. Today the terraced village is a fascinating destination to retrace the hydrogeological history of this gorgeous and fragile area. The inhabitants of old Gairo went to populate the new suburbs of Gairo Toquisara and Gairo Sant'Elena and the new seaside town of Cardedu.
