Dualchi Media Valle del Tirso

Church of the Beata Vergine of Itria

The Church of the Beata Vergine of Itria is situated in the square of the same name in the centre of Dualchi. Based on some documents kept by the archiepiscopal curia, it is assumed that it was built in the 17th century. The building, built in basalt stone, has a gabled facade surmounted by an anthropomorphic cross of red trachyte, which was named '“s’angelu” after its appearance. The belfry was built later, presumably in the 18th century. Inside the church there is a statue of the Madonna of Itria, representing the miraculous liberation of a Christian slave from his Turkish owner. In 1930, major restorations were carried out and the current stone altar was built to replace the wooden one from 1628, which was destroyed in the early 20th century. The poet Celestino Caddeo, in one of his satirical compositions of 1902, referred to the state of abandonment of the church and described the presence inside of three wooden statues portraying St. Constantine, St. Philip and St. Martino, unfortunately currently missing. The festivities honouring the Blessed Virgin take place every year on the Tuesday after Pentecost, here it is called Su Martis de Pasca ’e Frores.
