Castle of Agugliastra

The Castle of Agugliastra, also known as the Castle of Medusa, stands on a hill 50 metres above sea level, between Girasole and Lotzorai, with a view over the territory and the sea between Baunei and Arbatax. Due to its favourable geographical position, it was the basis of settlements for sighting and defending the territory from enemy attacks, both on land and sea. 

From the dimensions of the 16th-century representations we can imagine the vastness of the fortification in medieval times, which had two rectangular corner towers and a high central conical keep. Right now, its red granite ruins almost entirely covered by vegetation, can be seen from the area of Girasole on the ex 125 highway, awaiting restoration and enhancement.
