Bari sardo Ogliastra

Barì Spanish Tower

The Spanish tower of Barisardo is located on the top of a rocky outcrop over the sea dividing the shoreline into 2 parts. It was built by the Aragones between 1572 and 1639 in order to protect the coastline from pirate’ attacks. In fact, since the Bizantines age, Sardinan coastlines suffered pirates raids which required a precise system of defence. The tower stands for 13 metres in height and a diameter of about 11 metres. As a lookout tower, it dominates the shoreline between Capo Bella Vista e Capo Sferracavallo. After the second world war the shoreline was renamed as mari de is ominis (the sea of the men) north side and mari de is feminas (the sea of women) south side since they were separately used by women and men.
